  • Healing is a Process
The following is based on a true story. A local man was in the business of leveling foundations for old, vintage homes. He had done this type of work for years and knew exactly how to level a foundation and the best way to do it. Slow and steady. This was frustrating for the general contractors. They could not begin their work until the foundation was level.

  • Random Thoughts
Today's thoughts are going to be random ideas that have popped into my head over the past twenty or so years. Some of these ideas are grounded in reality and others are a bit more radical and whimsical. They lean toward the "what if" side of life. Let's jump in and see what happens to you as you ponder these thoughts.

  • Twenty-five Minutes
A lot can happen in twenty-five minutes. I had the pleasure of witnessing an event about a year and a half ago. A man was in the office for his first visit. He had been to many chiropractors all across the country as he had moved from East to West and back East again. He had always used chiropractors for symptom relief with great success.

  • The Problem of Obesity
A new analysis of current government statistics on obesity is mostly disheartening, as the report's name, "F Is For Fat," implies. The Trust for America's Health and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which spends over $100 million annually to combat obesity, say that the incidence and severity among Americans continues to rise.

  • Purpose
Have you ever felt the desire rise up in your heart that there is more than you are doing in your life? I know I have felt this way several times in my life. Most of the time I have acted on this prompting. There was a man in history that has motivated me recently.

  • Freedom
We just celebrated our country's independence. I must admit that I do not fully appreciate the freedoms that I have in this country. Traveling in foreign countries has helped me comprehend what lack of freedom and opportunity look like, but I am still insulated from living under oppression that burdens me to the point of revolution.

  • How Do We Live?
So now the rubber meets the road. How do we live? Do we abandon traditional medicine and the "hyper-mechanistic" culture we now live in? Do we blend vitalism and mechanism into a quasi health care/ sick care approach to living? Or do we go with the culture and surrender decisions to the next most-important drug or surgery that we must have or else?

  • The Industry Behind Medicine
A medical doctor, practicing in a solo practice, is not much different than a chiropractor. A patient comes in for an appointment; the doctor meets with the patient; the patient pays for the visit and goes on their way. The industry behind the visit is the prescription medications, injections, special studies, lab panels, referrals to other specialists, etc. That is where the real money is in medicine.

  • Vitalism vs. Mechanism
One way of answering this question is to spout off research and statistics coupled with lengthy explanations of physiology and its anatomic connections.

  • Why Visit the Chiropractor When I'm Not in Pain

  • Do Less and Do Different
This weekend I traveled to Virginia Beach with my family for a quick getaway for Mother's Day. When I started thinking about this trip, there was one phrase that kept coming to mind; "Do less and do different."

  • HHS Report to Congress
On June 16, 2009, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius submitted a report to Congress, evaluating chiropractic services under Medicare.

  • Do you really want to be better?
This is a strange question to some, but revolutionary to others. Recently, I had to ask a new practice member this very question. They just sat in the chair with a shocked look on their face. The reality of the past twenty years they had invested in the circle of sameness seemed to hit them like a ton of bricks. Moments later.tears. They were cleansing tears; tears of release.

  • Different Types of Chiropractic
I am going to explain the different types of chiropractic for you today. I think it is important information that will very well help you in your healing process. I encourage you to pass this on to your family and friends.

  • The Stone Wall
Four years ago I built several dry stack stone walls at my house. These mortar-less structures are dynamic and shift with each passing season. A five year old walking across it, jumping off it, and "discovering" the perfect rock he needed for his fort on the wall, takes it toll as well. Last year, my wife noticed that the appearance of the walls was beginning to look a little worse for the wear and mentioned that the walls needed work.

  • How a Rock in Your Shoe can Ruin Your Day?
Have you ever been walking around and somehow a pebble gets in your shoe? How annoying is that! When that happens you can count on having to stop, take your shoe off, and get rid of the pebble. Sometimes you might just try and push on. You try and ignore it. You say to yourself, "It isn't that bad.

  • Voltage and Your Health
Tara's husband is a Master Electrician and one day we were having a discussion about voltage. I was thinking of doing some home improvements and thought I should understand what I was getting into so that I would not be "shocked" at the outcome. What I took away was the voltage is the force that drives the current.

  • Chiropractic without specificity is nothing
Have you ever considered the global effect of an adjustment on your body? Think about your first upper cervical adjustment. Many of you felt a power surge! You felt different. You were different. Your physiology changed. You began to breathe deeper.

  • Avindia: The Fall of Yet Another Drug
One of my mentors in Chiropractic, Dr. Dennis Perman, wrote an excellent article this morning I wanted to share with you. Please take a moment and read it. It could save loved one's life.

  • Immune Health
“With cold and flu season here, what can I do to keep healthy?” I have been asked this question hundreds of times over the past month. I think it’s time I answer this question for everyone.

  • Re-Energize and Referrals
What do you expect in life? I will tell you that I expect amazing opportunities and events every day. I expect to see miracles. I have noticed something over the past year I feel compelled to share with you. Many of you have taken a turtle approach to your life. You have retracted into a shell and are afraid to have high expectations or even see what is possible for you today. In a season where “hope” and “change” are the rally points, many are retreating and ducking for cover.

  • Rare
A new friend of mine, Hillel, gave me a catalogue to a rare bookseller, Bauman Rare Books. He wandered into this shop while visiting New York City. While in there he signed up for their catalogue and now receives them on a regular basis. As I thumbed my way through the catalogue, I was surprised at times at what is considered valuable and what is not.

  • Frame
“Your house is framed out.” I will never forget that call from our builder five years ago when we were building our current house. There was a sense of completion. Once a house is framed, it has forum, shape and an identity. The frame may not be the pretty part. Often it is wood 2x4’s or metal studs that are bare and quite boring. The purpose of the frame is for support and structure.

  • Motives
While the underlying current of your life tends to move in one direction and slowly shift, what we live day to day can be rather tumultuous. One author likened it to the waves hitting the shore and the tidal action. Every moment waves are going in and out; hitting the shore and receding. The underlying movement of the tide is either rising or falling. At quick glace, nothing seems to be changing. In fact it looks redundant!

  • No
With a four year old, I am accustomed to hearing the word “No.” “Harrison it is time for a bath.” “No!” “Harrison, it is time to go to bed.” “No!!!” So when do we forget how to use that word? Sometime during our post-high school years is my best guess. We begin to take on more responsibility and want to do well and please others. Take it from a Midwesterner, I know all about not making waves and pleasing others.

  • Thanksgiving
I am always blown away when I really stop and consider what I am thankful for and the abundance that I do have. I get trapped in the mindset of ingratitude that leads to nowhere and cuts off further blessings from coming my way. I think of my kids, if they are not thankful for what they have, I certainly will not get them anything else until they appreciate what they have.

  • Discover
Being able to ascertain how someone is able to function at a given task often leads to broad brush stereotype of that individual. For example, “Bob” cannot do job “x” well therefore he must not be a good worker.

  • Aptitude

  • Education v. Teaching
As you know, I usually share my pontifications on life as a means to build you up in strong and noble thought. Today we are going a different direction. Today I am going to do a little teaching.

  • Renewal
For some reason, shorter days and cooler temperatures always invigorate me. I like the heat of summer, but the gradual change into fall stirs something up inside me. I feel a rebirth of creativity, an opportunity for change, and a sense excitement.

  • Study: American Kids take Anti-Psychotic Medicines at Six Times the Rate of U.K. Children
CHICAGO - American children take anti-psychotic medicines at about six times the rate of children in the United Kingdom, according to a comparison based on a new U.K. study. Does it mean U.S. kids are being over-treated? Or that U.K. children are being under-treated?

  • Spring into Eating Well
Local foods are important to your diet. It is astounding how much more vital nutrients are in fresh local food than imported food. Did you know that locally grown foods could have up to 80% more nutritional value than food that is shipped in from elsewhere?

  • The Bad and the Beautiful
I watched The Bad and the Beautiful (a 1952 black-and-white movie) this weekend with my wife. The story went something like this: Kirk Douglas plays the part of an aspiring movie producer and gets three people, a writer, director, and star, on board with him to propel his movies into the limelight. While riding the success of their venture, Douglas’s character slowly cuts out the people who got him to the point he is at in his career. They all went on to great careers of their own after their dismissal. Douglas on the other hand is left lonely and bankrupt.

  • The 1918 Flu Pandemic
The 1918 influenza pandemic has been labeled in history as one of the most devastating outbreaks in the history of the world with deaths estimated at between 20 and 40 million people. Over 675,000 American citizens lost their lives due to this awful epidemic.

  • Da da dum dum dump. “Another one bites the dust…”
The rock band Queen may have been predicting the future of prescription drugs. As Big Phama tries to create the latest and greatest magic bullet, one thing stands true. They keep falling on their faces. The latest to fall is Vytorin or one of its components, Zetia.

  • Grapes and the Common Cold
I recently had a patient who ate grapes and shortly thereafter developed a cold. This was a startling revelation! I had never made the connection between grapes and the common cold. The more I began to think about this, the more I began to wonder about the ramifications of such a connection.

  • What are symptoms? What is health? Simple and scientific answers.
A sign or an indication of disorder or disease, especially when experienced by an individual as a change from normal function, sensation, or appearance.

  • You Have The Power To Be Healthy!
Perhaps the greatest discovery of our time is the awesome power of the human body to heal and rejuvenate itself.

  • Purification Program
We are coming up on a brand new year that is full of opportunities to accomplish your new year’s resolutions. Every year we invite Dr. John Hess to our office to present the purification program. So many of you participate in this annual event and tell us how great it is to start the year off right. If you have never done a program like this, I encourage you to attend.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids protect against Parkinson's, study says
Quebec City, November 26, 2007-Omega-3 fatty acids protect the brain against Parkinson's disease, according to a study by Universite Laval researchers published in the online edition of the FASEB Journal, the journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. This study, supervised by Frederic Calon and Francesca Cicchetti, is the first to demonstrate the protective effect of a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids against Parkinson's.

  • Immune Boost: This Is Spinal Zap by Katie Gilbert
It came to the point where something had to give. Lilian Garcia's pollen, dust, and food allergies were getting her down. Her allergies were even affecting her job. The recording artist and World Wrestling ringmaster's voice wasn't achieving optimal performance. But that soon changed. While she was cutting a record with singer-songwriter Jon Secada, he suggested chiropractic care.

  • The Facts
Facts can be your best friends and not your enemy. “Don’t confuse me with the facts,” is a funny phrase we sometimes hear. It is funny to us because we all know that sometimes we are quick to make decisions without knowing all of the facts. Sometimes we make impulsive health decisions without knowing all of the facts. Then, this issue isn’t very funny at all.

  • The First Chiropractic Patient Did Not Have a Back Problem
Many chiropractors are perplexed as to why chiropractic has become associated with bad backs, stiff necks and other musculoskeletal problems. The first chiropractic patient was deaf and he, in fact, did not even go to the chiropractor for his deafness.

  • Listening to Your Body
Most of us would rather talk than listen. People write best-selling books on how to become a good listener. It is an art. Many women say that a man who is a good listener is more attractive than a man with good looks. When it comes to listening to our body, we all could take a lesson or two. Perhaps part of the problem is that it is a one-way conversation. If you are ever caught talking to your body, well, they just might take you away.

  • Why is Chiropractic Different?
All health approaches can be divided into two major categories. The first is directed toward the treatment of disease, its effects and on occasion, its causes. This approach believes that if disease can be removed, covered up or driven out of the body, health will somehow be the end result. It focuses its attention on diseases and their symptoms and attempts to find just the right treatment for each disease, one that will be effective yet not cause adverse side-effects to the person who, as a result of the disease, is usually in a weakened condition already. This approach to health, of course, is the most expensive, the most time-consuming and the most dangerous. It also often presents the most heroic or dramatic results. Medicine and surgery are the two most well-known examples of the disease-treatment approach. However, there are dozens more, many of them drugless and more holistic in nature that treat the whole person to alleviate a disease.

  • Health Benefits of Yoga
Yoga and Chiropractic are two healing arts that go hand-in-hand. Combined with the balancing of your nervous system and concomitant normalization of the various systems of the body, yoga is of tremendous benefit to those looking to expand their health awareness.

  • Immunity and Chiropractic
Skeptics of chiropractic question how chiropractic can help the immune system in the absence of scientific studies. One could also question how physicians for the last 100 years could say to drink fluids and rest if you have the flu. Does fluid drown bacteria? Does lying down cause a virus to die? Of course not. Clearly rest and fluids do not effect the microorganisms. They are intended to help the sick person's body, specifically his or her immune system. This helps the body fight the microorganisms and their effect.

  • What Do Chiropractors Do?
It is important to us that you not only understand what we are doing for you at this chiropractic office but why we are doing it. One of the biggest reasons why people do not refer others for care is because they are not exactly sure what we do. Either they misunderstand or they are simply unable to communicate it. The basic principles of chiropractic are actually quite simple, so simple in fact, that anyone should be able to explain them to family, friends and associates.
